A total of 2,770 fines were handed down in the first four months of this year to people who were caught lighting up in places where smoking is banned, with parks, public gardens and outdoor sitting areas the most common places to catch violators, a statement from the Health Bureau (SSM) said yesterday.
In addition, the statement said there were four incidents of counterfeit cigarettes being sold.According to the bureau, 93.9 percent of the 2,770 violators are men, while 6.1 percent were female violators. Among the total number of violators, 53.5 percent were local residents, 40.9 percent were tourists and 5.6 percent were non-resident workers, commonly known as blue card holders.
