Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced in a statement on Saturday that its officers seized 41 articles of clothing on Wednesday at the Macau-Zhuhai Qingmao pedestrian checkpoint.
According to the statement, on that day, customs officers at the checkpoint’s arrival hall noticed a female traveller who entered the Chinese mainland through the “green channel” behaving abnormally during the routine X-ray of her luggage, because of which they intercepted her for inspection.
The statement said that customs officers discovered 20 branded shorts and yoga leggings in her luggage.
However, customs officers also noticed that the smuggler appeared unusually “bulky”, after which they discovered that she was wearing 21 additional branded items such as vests, shorts, yoga leggings, the statement said, adding that all 41 items of clothing still had the price tags attached.
The smuggler admitted to transporting the goods for others in exchange for a fee.
Gongbei Customs reminded the public in the statement that according to relevant regulations, evading customs supervision by hiding and taking goods subject to taxes into the Chinese mainland constitutes smuggling. If the circumstances are severe enough to constitute a crime, criminal liability will be pursued.
Gongbei Customs seizes 83,800 cigarettes at HZMB
Meanwhile, Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced in a statement on Friday that its officers seized 83,800 cigarettes at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge’s (HZMB) Zhuhai checkpoint on March 6.
According to the statement, on that day, customs officers noticed an abnormality during a routine X-ray inspection of a dual-plate vehicle.
Upon inspection, the officers discovered 419 cartons of “Double Happiness” brand cigarettes, amounting to 83,800 cigarettes, concealed in various parts of the vehicle, such as the dashboard, doors, floor, and boot.
The statement quoted Article 3 of the Chinese mainland’s Tobacco Monopoly Law as stipulating that “the state shall, according to law, exercise monopoly administration over the manufacture, sale, import and export of tobacco monopoly commodities, and adopt a tobacco monopoly licensing system”, according to which, the statement noted, the export of cigarettes must obtain a licence from the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration.
