Macau Customs Service officers raided a parallel-trading den in the peninsula’s northern district on Thursday where they seized 1.3 tonnes of frozen steak worth around 200,000 patacas in total.

According to a statement on Friday, on Thursday night the officers caught a 44-year-old local male who ran the business and hired parallel traders to smuggle frozen steak from Macau to the mainland.

The male faces a fine in compliance with the relevant provisions listed in the External Trade Law, the statement said.

Moreover, the statement added, the male violated the Food Safety Law as the supposedly frozen steak was stored merely at room temperature, adding that the Customs Service has meanwhile transferred the case to the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) for follow-up action.

Gongbei Customs seizes HK$356,000 in cash at HZMB

Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced in a statement yesterday that its officers seized HK$356,000 (366,500 patacas) in cash at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge on March 28.

According to the statement, on that day, customs officers at the mega bridge’s Zhuhai checkpoint noticed that the X-ray image of the handbag carried by a passenger walking through the “green channel” was abnormal, and they subsequently intercepted the passenger for inspection.

Upon inspection, customs officers discovered that HK$356,000 in undeclared cash was hidden inside the handbag.

The statement did not reveal the person’s gender.

Gongbei Customs reminded the public that a large amount of cash is a restricted entry and exit item. Passengers entering and exiting the mainland are required to follow the national regulations and take the initiative to declare any amount of cash exceeding 20,000 yuan or its equivalent in non-mainland currency they are carrying. Any traveller violating the regulations faces a fine.
