The Fire Services Bureau (CB) announced in a statement on Saturday that a cat is suspected of having started a fire in a flat of a residential building on Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida (荷蘭園大馬路).
The bureau said in the statement that it received an emergency call on Saturday at 10:46 a.m. about a fire in a flat in the Hoi Tou Garden Building (海濤花園) near Lou Lim Ioc Garden.
After arriving at the building, firefighters extinguished the blaze in the kitchen of the 20th-floor flat.
The firefighters noted that the area affected by the fire measured approximately one metre by two metres and was blackened by thick smoke. The statement added that the blaze was suspected to have been caused by a cat accidentally switching on a ceramic hob, also known as cooktop.
According to the statement, 30 people were evacuated. Three people felt unwell during the incident but left of their own accord after being assessed by paramedics.
Speaking via phone yesterday, a CB spokesperson confirmed that the cat survived the incident.
