The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the several Chinese traditions that have grown into a major sports event bringing together different sectors of local communities and people from around the world.

To most in the West, the festival is a team-paddling sport. The event, in fact, is originated from an age-old Chinese tradition known as “Tuen Ng Jit” in Cantonese or “Duanwu Jie” in Putonghua.

“Tuen Ng Jit” is a day to commemorate patriotic poet and minister Qu Yuan (340-270 BC) who drowned himself on the fifth day of the fifth month on the lunar solar calendar.
