The Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement yesterday that it has recognised more than 1,000 residents who completed five blood donations last year during a commendation ceremony held as part of the activities marking World Blood Donor Day on Sunday, highlighting the contribution of voluntary donors to Macau’s healthcare system.
The “5-time Blood Donor Recognition Ceremony” was held on Sunday to honour the 1,009 blood donors who reached the five-donation milestone last year, the statement said, noting that the event was attended by more than 300 donors alongside their families and friends.
In his speech, SSM Director Alvis Lo Iek Long said voluntary blood donation reflects the spirit of mutual support and care among Macau residents, the statement added.
Pointing to this year’s World Blood Donor Day theme, “A drop of humanity. Give blood. Save lives”, Dr Lo emphasised that these altruistic actions are essential to the safe operation of Macau’s healthcare services, the statement noted.
According to SSM data, 13,942 people registered to donate blood in 2025, providing critical support for 3,669 patients who received transfusions totalling 16,853 units of red blood cells (RBC).
The bureau noted that donors who were unable to attend the ceremony can collect their certificates directly from the Blood Donation Centre in Nape, adding that it will continue its promotional efforts leading up to World Blood Donor Day this Sunday.
Publicity banners have been installed across Macau and Taipa until this Sunday, and residents who donate blood on the day itself will receive a special souvenir and have access to a themed photo backdrop at the centre, the statement said.
Additionally, the centre will send appreciation cards and souvenirs to over 60 institutions, public entities and schools that coordinated blood drives over the past year, said the statement. In order to ensure an efficient service and reduce waiting times, the bureau reminded those planning to donate blood this Sunday to book an appointment in advance via the centre’s website (https://www.ssm.gov.mo/cts/blook-ser/preson-make) or the “Macau One Account” mobile application.
