Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced in a statement yesterday that its officers seized methamphetamine, also known as meth or ice, and ketamine, also known as vitamin K, at the Gongbei checkpoint on June 18.
In the statement, customs officials identified the smuggler as a mainland Chinese man surnamed Zhang.
According to the statement, Zhang entered Zhuhai that evening through the “green channel” in the passenger inspection hall arriving from Macau, where he was stopped by customs officers. During questioning, officers noticed that Zhang appeared unusually nervous. Upon a physical search, they discovered a transparent plastic bag containing a white crystalline substance hidden inside a cigarette packet in his trouser pocket.
The substance was later identified as a mixture containing methamphetamine (commonly known as “ice”) and ketamine, with a net weight of 0.72 grammes.
Gongbei Customs reminded the public that regulated drugs include opium, heroin, methamphetamine (crystal meth), morphine, cannabis, cocaine, and other state-controlled narcotics and psychotropic substances that cause addiction. Regardless of the quantity involved, the smuggling, trafficking, transportation, or manufacturing of narcotics carries criminal liability and severe penalties.
Gongbei Customs seizes 26 vascular stents at HZMB
Meanwhile, Gongbei Customs also announced on Saturday that its officers seized 26 vascular stents at the Zhuhai Port checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) on June 23.
According to the statement, customs officers conducting routine evening inspections flagged an anomaly in the X-ray image of a Hong Kong single-licence vehicle. Upon further inspection, officers discovered two bags containing a total of 26 boxes of medical devices on the front passenger seat.
The devices were identified as medical vascular stents*, which fall under Category III (higher-risk medical devices) of the Chinese mainland’s Medical Device Classification Standards. The driver was unable to provide any valid legal documentation, and the products lacked Chinese labelling or instruction manuals.
Gongbei Customs reminded the public that under the Regulations on the Supervision and Administration of Medical Devices, the Chinese mainland has implemented a strict registration system for Category III medical devices. Imported medical devices must be properly registered or filed, and must bear labels in the Chinese language and instruction manuals that comply with relevant regulations and mandatory standards. Devices lacking the required labelling, or those with manuals that fail to meet national requirements, are strictly prohibited from being imported.
*A medical vascular stent is a small, expandable wire mesh tube inserted into a blood vessel to treat narrowing or blockage. Its primary purpose is to act as a scaffold, mechanically holding an artery or vein open to ensure adequate blood flow to vital organs and tissues. – Gemini
