Macau violinist places 5th at int’l contest in Hungary

Local violinist Sabrina Wang Iat Ham has finished fifth overall at the 6th Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition in Budapest, Hungary, standing out among young musicians from more than 20 countries and regions, according to a statement by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) on Friday.

Wang, a student at the School of Music’s Continuing Arts Education Programme, under the Macao Conservatory, achieved the result at the competition held from June 25 to July 3 at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, the statement said. 

Born in Macau, Wang, 13, entered the conservatory at the age of six and has received years of structured musical training, the statement noted, adding that she has previously won the academy’s highest honour, the Performing Arts Elite Award, as well as the Best Performance Ensemble Award and the IC Prize for Western Instrument Solo at the 42nd Macao Young Musicians Competition.

Guided by instructor Wang Hao, a professional musician with the Macao Orchestra, Sabrina Wang advanced to the final round with her technical proficiency and musical interpretation before securing fifth place in the highly competitive event, the statement said.

The Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition is one of Europe’s leading competitions for violinists aged 22 and below, according to the statement. Held at the historic Liszt Academy of Music, it attracts talented young musicians worldwide and is judged by an international panel of distinguished professors and renowned performers, the statement highlighted.

The bureau said that the Macao Conservatory will continue strengthening its arts education platform and nurturing young local talent to support the development of Macau’s performing arts sector.
