Macau was hit by persistently torrential rain on Monday; however, sunny skies are expected to return over the coming days, with an active southwest monsoon gradually easing, according to a statement by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG).
Over the next few days, Macau will come under the influence of an upper-air anticyclone, bringing clear and fine weather along with very hot conditions, the statement said, adding that the maximum daily temperatures could reach 33°C or higher, with urban areas potentially experiencing temperatures one to two degrees higher than elsewhere in Macau.
Meanwhile, the local observatory said it will issue the Yellow Hot Weather Warning Signal as conditions warrant. Due to high daytime heat and elevated perceived temperatures, the bureau advised all those engaged in outdoor activities or work to take sun protection measures and stay properly hydrated, the statement said.
According to the statement, a low-pressure system currently located east of the Philippines may develop into a tropical cyclone. Guided by the upper-air anticyclone, it is forecast to move towards the northern part of the South China Sea over the next few days.
However, various forecast models yesterday showed discrepancies regarding its track and speed after entering the South China Sea. Yesterday’s forecast suggested it will stay over open waters for a relatively long period with minimal terrain interference, creating conditions favourable for it to intensify into a typhoon or higher-level tropical cyclone, the statement said, adding that under the influence of this potential system, winds in Macau are forecast to strengthen significantly over the weekend, and the weather will turn unsettled with frequent heavy showers and occasional thunderstorms.
The statement pointed out that if the system ultimately takes a track closer to the Guangdong coast, its impact on Macau will be even more pronounced, presenting a high meteorological risk.
Members of the public are urged to closely monitor the latest weather developments via official channels such as SMG official website: www.smg.gov.mo.
