The Portuguese government has appointed a new consul-general to Hong Kong and Macau, public broadcaster TDM/Radio Macau reported earlier this week, quoting unidentified sources in Lisbon.
Thursday's report did not say when Alexandre Leitao is slated to arrive in Macau. Portugal's Macau-based consul-general is simultaneously accredited to Hong Kong.
Leitao will replace Paulo Cunha Alves who has been posted to Macau and Hong Kong since October 2018.
According to the report, Leitao, born in Coimbra in December 1965, began his diplomatic career in 1999. He is currently the Portuguese Foreign Ministry's special envoy for climate affairs.
He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Coimbra (UC) in Geography and a master's degree in Political Science and International Relations from the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP).
He was previously posted by Portugal to the EU in Brussels, Benguela in Angola, and Dakar in Senegal. He was EU ambassador to Timor-Leste (East Timor) in 2016-19.
