Power utility CEM has opened registration for the fifth edition of its Rummikub* Competition, which will be held on October 25 at the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre.
According to a CEM statement released on Friday, the one-day event aims to promote intergenerational interaction while raising funds for charity.
Jointly organised by CEM, the Macao Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM aka Gung Luen) and the General Volunteers Association of Macau, the competition has been held annually since 2022, the statement said.
Last year’s edition attracted nearly 1,000 applicants aged between 6 and 97, according to the statement. Registration remains open until September 25, with the list of accepted participants to be announced on CEM’s Facebook page on September 30. Successful applicants will also be notified by email and SMS.
The competition features two categories: a School Group for P1 to F6 students, with applications to be submitted through schools and a quota of 40 teams; and an Open Group for Macau residents aged 6 or above, with a quota of 160 participants, the statement highlighted.
Should applications exceed the quota, participants will be selected by computer ballot, the statement underlined. It also noted that children aged between 6 and 12 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Each accepted participant is required to pay an entry fee of 100 patacas, the statement added, noting that CEM will cover the fees for all School Group participants, those aged under 18 or 65 and above, as well as holders of a valid Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) Beneficiary Card.
All entry fee proceeds, without deduction of expenses, will be donated to the Cradle of Hope Association to support children from underprivileged families, according to the statement.
Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top finishers in both categories, while Merit Awards, fourth-place prizes and a Most Games Won Award will also be presented, the statement said. Interested participants can register online via CEM’s website (www.cem-macau.com) or obtain more information through the power utility’s Facebook page and WeChat account (search “澳電CEM”).
The 5th CEM Rummikub Competition will take place on October 25, aiming to encourage interaction among participants of different generations while supporting charitable causes through the event’s proceeds, the statement added.
*Rummikub is a popular tile-based board game for two to four players that combines elements of the card game rummy and mahjong. It uses 106 tiles (numbered 1 to 13 in four colours, plus two jokers), and players try to be the first to clear their racks by forming groups and runs.
