Macau population rises to 686,500 in June – 22,553 per km2

Macau’s population rose by 600 year-on-year to 686,500 at the end of the first half of the year, resulting in a population density of 22,553 per km2, one of the world’s highest, based on Macau’s current land area of 33.4 km2, according to official demographics released on Friday.

At the end of 1999, Macau’s population stood at 438,100 and its land area at 23.8 km2 – a population density of 18,407 per km2.

Females accounted for 54.0 percent of the population at the end of June. Male babies accounted for 52.5 percent of the 1,340 live births in the first half of the year.

In the first six months, the number of marriage registrations rose by five to 1,447.
