Four local victims have reported similar WeChat scams over the past few days, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Choi Ian Fai said during a regular press conference at the PJ headquarters yesterday.
According to Choi, the victims reported the scams between Friday and Sunday, saying their WeChat accounts had been hacked and were being used by the hackers to borrow money via the application’s “red envelope” from their friends and family members on their phones’ contact lists.
The WeChat red envelope application offers users the ability to provision money in the form of virtual ‘credits’ to other users of the application. Money is deposited into a user’s WeChat Pay account, which can be used for purchases, according to Wikipedia.
