Suspect blames academic stress
The Public Security Police (PSP) have arrested a university student from the Chinese mainland for secretly filming female students in the toilets at a local university, PSP spokesman Wong Chi Weng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Wong identified the suspect as a man surnamed Chen, in his 20s, who is studying at a university on one of Macau’s offshore islands.
According to Wong, police received a report on Saturday from a mainland female university student who suspected that she had been secretly filmed while using a women’s toilets at about 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
The victim told police that she noticed a mobile phone camera pointing at her from above the partition of an adjacent cubicle. She subsequently reported the incident to the university, prompting PSP officers to launch an investigation the next day.
PSP officers identified Chen as the suspect and arrested him at about 8:00 p.m. on Saturday at the university’s student accommodation.
Under questioning, Chen admitted to the offence, claiming that he had been under academic pressure and had secretly filmed female students using the toilets to relieve stress, Wong said.
Wong added that PSP officers examined Chen’s mobile phone and found 28 suspected illicit video clips and 10 photographs taken in the same women’s toilets. Three of the videos and nine photographs involved the female complainant, while the remaining files involved other female students.
Chen also admitted that he began surreptitiously filming female students last month.
Chen has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on suspicion of invasion of privacy.
The suspect faces a prison term of up to two years.
