SJM Resorts and the Macau Artist Society (MAS) are jointly presenting a lantern art exhibition themed “Legacy of Light and Craft” at Grand Lisboa Palace’s (GLP) Jardim Secreto (“Secret Garden”), showcasing lantern installations by four local artists.
According to a statement on Wednesday, the free admission exhibition, which is part of SJM’s wider programme for both the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day Golden Week, runs through November 15.
The works comprise Sit Ka Kit’s “Knight’s Shadow” that utilises geometric lines and a chess knight; Jovinia António’s “Brocade Scroll” that features cloth-dyed motifs and contemporary print patterns; Felipe Wong’s “Shared Moon” that combines metalworking technique Cloisonné* with Costa Rican festival oxcart-inspired motifs; and “Lotus Realm” by Leong Sin Teng that brings together ancient music and responsive sensor technology.
In her speech at the opening ceremony on Wednesday, SJM Managing Director Daisy Ho Chiu Fung was quoted as saying: “Through collaboration with artists across disciplines, we seek to give time-honoured craftsmanship innovative relevance and allow it to flourish in a contemporary context”.
She added: “We also hope to support Macau’s creative industries, strengthen the synergies of ‘Tourism + Culture,’ and reinforce Macau’s role as ‘a base for exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and diverse cultures coexist,’ enriching cultural tourism offerings for Macau”.
Meanwhile, the statement highlighted that several activities will also be held. Among them are the “Costa Rican Painted Lantern Workshop” on September 19 and the “Intangible Cultural Heritage Paper-cut Lantern Workshop” on September 26, hosted by GLP Arte and having a 125 pataca-admission fee.
The Lantern Sketching Day at Grand Lisboa Palace & Dining Package will also be available from October 10.
