The Public Security Police Force (PSP) has arrested a man from the Philippines for sexually harassing a woman, also from the Philippines, PSP spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference on Friday.

Wong identified the suspect as a non-resident worker (NRW) in his 40s surnamed Aquino.

According to Wong, on the evening of last Tuesday, the Public Security Police received a report from a Filipino female non-resident worker in her 20s. She stated that on the evening of September 19, while she was at work, a foreign man she did not know suddenly reached out and slapped her buttocks. She considered this to be indecent assault and harassment.

Upon receiving the report, PSP officers immediately reviewed CCTV footage from the shop where the incident occurred and used the city’s CCTV surveillance system to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify Aquino, Wong said, adding that officers arrested him last Wednesday near Avenida de Horta e Costa.

Aquino admitted to having slapped the victim’s buttocks, but claimed that his action was merely a light-hearted greeting and not intentional harassment, according to Wong. Based on the evidence gathered in the investigation, Wong said the police confirmed that the suspect and the victim did not know each other prior to the incident.

Aquino has since been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a sexual harassment charge.

Police nab cabbie for short-changing passenger

Meanwhile, Public Security Police Force (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon announced during Friday’s regular press conference that PSP officers have arrested a local taxi driver for short-changing a passenger.

Wong identified the suspect as a local man in his 60s surnamed Leong.

According to Wong, the incident took place in mid-to-late July this year. A male tourist took a taxi from Avenida da Prosperidade in Taipa to the Hengqin Port immigration checkpoint. Upon arrival, he paid the 65-pataca fare with a HK$1,000 banknote (1,030 patacas). As he was in a hurry, he did not count the change. After getting out of the taxi, he discovered that he had only received HK$35 in change and subsequently reported the matter to the Public Security Police for assistance, Wong said.

PSP officers identified Leong through surveillance footage and summoned him to a police station for questioning last Wednesday. Wong added that Leong admitted that, motivated by greed, he had deliberately short-changed the passenger by HK$900.

Leong has since been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge.
