Macau’s Light Rapid Transit (LRT) will introduce electric vehicle charging services in the car park of Barra Public Transport Interchange today, adding seven charging spaces to support green mobility and improve parking facilities, according to a joint statement by the operator and the Transport Bureau (DSAT) on Saturday.

The seven spaces have been converted from existing light vehicle parking bays at the car park, which is managed by LRT, the statement said, adding that the charging facilities are operated by a private entity (local power utility CEM), while the company provides the site and supporting infrastructure.

The charging equipment comprises one national-standard* and one European-standard** wired fast charger, two wired medium-speed chargers for each of the two standards, and one unwired European-standard medium-speed charger, the statement noted, adding that drivers must pay the car park fees set by LRT and separate charging fees to CEM.

The statement reminded motorists to check the service charges, entry and exit arrangements, and other conditions before using the facilities. In order to ensure fair access and turnover, fast charging is limited to three hours, while medium-speed charging is capped at 10 hours, the statement noted, adding that cars should leave the car park once charging is complete or no longer required.

Vehicles exceeding the applicable time limit will incur an additional occupancy fee of 50 patacas for each hour or part of an hour, the statement noted, adding that vehicles using the charging service will also be excluded from the car park’s 24-hour parking fee cap.

Following the conversion, the car park will retain 201 light vehicle spaces, comprising 191 regular spaces, seven electric vehicle charging spaces, and three spaces for persons with disabilities (PWDs), the statement noted, adding that it would monitor parking and charging usage and review the arrangements as needed to improve the service.

*National-standard refers to China’s official EV charging standard (GB/T), which uses distinct connector shapes for AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current) charging. It is designed specifically for vehicles manufactured for the Chinese mainland market. - Gemini

**European-standard refers to the unified charging specification adopted across the European Union (Type 2 for AC, CCS2 for DC fast charging). It uses a single, standardised port design compatible with European-built electric vehicles. - Gemini
