A middle-aged male non-resident worker (NRW) fell victim to a sex service scam last Tuesday, losing 24,000 yuan (28,880 patacas), Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Ka Weng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Ho, the victim was chatting with someone on a social media platform last Tuesday. The person asked him to download a separate messaging app and claimed that it could provide sexual services. Ho added that the individual then sent a link which, when clicked on, led to a webpage displaying multiple photos of women.
The victim was instructed to complete a series of voting tasks before an encounter with his chosen woman could be arranged. Each vote required scanning a QR code and making a payment via an electronic wallet. The scammer claimed that the points earned through voting could later be redeemed for cash.
The victim ultimately made around 100 payments, but the other party refunded only the first two, according to Ho.
The remaining funds were never returned, and no sexual services were ever provided. Realising that he had been defrauded, the victim reported the case to the Judiciary Police, Ho said.
