A local university student in his twenties has been arrested for driving while disqualified after Public Security Police (PSP) officers caught him riding an illegally modified motorcycle during his driving ban, PSP spokeswoman Kong Chi Ian said during a regular press conference today.

The suspect, surnamed Chao, had been banned from driving between Wednesday this week and January 4 next year after previously jumping a red light.

According to Kong, at about 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, officers on patrol stopped Chao while he was riding a heavy motorcycle along Avenida da Ponte de Macau (澳門橋大馬路).

Under questioning, Chao claimed that he had not noticed that his driving ban had already taken effect.

Police checks revealed that the motorcycle did not conform to its registered specifications and had been illegally modified. Its exhaust noise also exceeded the permitted limit.

The police initiated proceedings against Chao over the vehicle’s illegal modifications and ordered him to take the motorcycle to the Transport Bureau (DSAT) for a special inspection.

Chao faces charges of riding a motorcycle during his driving ban and aggravated disobedience. The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for follow-up investigation.
