The public Macao Union Hospital in Cotai announced in a statement yesterday that Prof. Zheng Yuehong, chief physician of the Vascular Surgery Department at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), recently collaborated with its medical team to successfully perform an Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) for a classic abdominal aortic aneurysm.*
The large-scale healthcare complex in south Cotai is officially known as Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (CMM-PUMCH). It is jointly operated by the internationally renowned Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) in Beijing and the Macau government, thanks to the Central People’s Government’s support.
It is known as “Hip Woh” (“Harmony”) in Cantonese.
“Islands” is the official term referring to Taipa, Coloane, and Cotai.
The statement noted that the successful procedure marks a significant milestone in the continuous advancement of Macau’s vascular surgery expertise.
The patient, a male in his 70s, was diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm three years ago.
As the aneurysm continued to enlarge over time, timely surgical intervention became essential, the statement said, pointing out that abdominal aortic aneurysms are often referred to as “silent time bombs” because an untreated rupture carries a mortality rate exceeding 50 percent.
Although this case presented a classic abdominal aortic aneurysm, the minimally invasive procedure faced two major surgical challenges: 1) extremely narrow vascular access routes and 2) a high risk of thrombus [blood clot] detachment, the statement said, adding that the medical team finally overcame the difficulties with professional techniques and a rigorous surgical treatment plan.
Due to the advantages of minimally invasive surgery, the operation left only two small puncture wounds. The patient recovered smoothly after waking from anaesthesia and was able to get out of bed and walk normally on the day following the surgery, according to the statement.
