The Identification Services Bureau (DSI) said in a statement that it is following up on a case involving Macao SAR passport holders who were denied boarding a flight to Mexico while transiting through Beijing, after airline staff reportedly cited a temporary change to Mexico’s visa-free entry policy.

According to the bureau, the travellers were informed at the airport that their travel documents no longer met the visa-free entry conditions for Mexico and were therefore unable to board the flight.

After receiving the case, the bureau contacted the affected residents and enquired with the Consulate General of Mexico in Hong Kong, the statement said. The consulate replied that, as of the latest information available to it, there had been no change to Mexico’s visa-free entry policy for MSAR passport holders, the statement noted.

The bureau said it was actively liaising with the airline to clarify the details of the incident and will continue to follow up, the statement said.

Residents who encounter difficulties while travelling abroad can seek assistance through the following hotlines via DSI hotline (2837 0777) during office hours; 24-hour tourism hotline (2833 3000); Public Security Police Force 24-hour overseas emergency assistance hotline (2857 3333); and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Global Emergency Hotline for Consular Protection and Service (+86 10 12308)

Cases reported through these hotlines will be handled and followed up by the relevant departments under established mechanisms, the statement said.
