Gaming operator Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) last night announced in a statement a list of benefits for its staff members during typhoons, saying that the company and its employees had learnt an important lesson after Typhoon Hato slammed into Macau last Wednesday.

The statement came a week after Typhoon Hato hit Macau causing severe flooding, cutting off power and water supplies in the city. As the city dealt with the aftermath of Hato, namely severe flooding caused by a storm surge, Galaxy Macau’s Facebook page was flooded with negative comments with netizens complaining that the company had required staff to report to work during the typhoon and also asked its employees to volunteer to help clean its swimming pool area.

The statement, only available in Chinese, said that “GEG and our staff have all learnt an important lesson from Typhoon Hato. Coming up with a prompt response is to let staff know that we care about their suggestions and immediately improved the safety and welfare arrangements for staff.”

The statement added that “GEG vows to continue to actively be a better responsible enterprise.”

The list of typhoon support measures for staff mentioned in the statement includes a 1,200-pataca typhoon allowance for “operations staff”, flexible measures in the future for staff clocking in during typhoons, the establishment of a typhoon fund to offer staff financial assistance, a “special cash reward” and a bonus to be paid out to staff in two instalments – next month and in February next year.
