A local woman has been cheated out of about HK$1.75 million in an online scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Cho Man said yesterday.
According to Chan, the victim, who is about 30 years old, works in a casino VIP room.
Chan said the victim reported the case to the police on Friday, saying that she had met a man, claiming to live in the US, on messaging app WeChat in late-2015.
According to Chan, the suspect told the victim in November 2016 that he needed some yuan to ease a cash-flow problem he was facing, claiming that it was difficult to change money into yuan in the US.
The victim believed the suspect and sent 70,000 yuan to him via WeChat, Chan said.
