A Hong Kong man who was arrested in Macau last week for allegedly stealing gaming chips worth HK$800,000 in a casino in Cotai has been confirmed by a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Police Force to be a Police Tactical Unit (PTU) officer.

It was reported by local media on September 22 that a 28-year-old man from Hong Kong surnamed Yip stole gaming chips worth HK$800,000 belonging to a gambler from the mainland while the latter was exchanging some chips.

According to a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson at the time, the mainlander chased Yip, who was stopped eventually by the casino’s security guards.

The PJ spokesperson said that Yip admitted that he stole the gaming chips in a moment of greed because he had gambled away all his money.

Hong Kong media yesterday reported that the Hong Kong police spokesperson confirmed that a PTU officer has been detained in Macau for committing a criminal offence and would therefore be suspended from the force.
