Secretary for Administration and Justice Sonia Chan Hoi Fan said last week there was no need for the board members of Macau’s non-political municipal organisation to be elected by popular vote because it will not be a representative body, based on the spirit of the respective articles of the Macau Basic Law.
In response, directly-elected lawmaker Sulu Sou Ka Hou yesterday slammed the government for ruling out the possibility for the board members of the municipal organisation to be elected by popular vote, accusing the government of “distorting” the respective articles of the Macau Basic Law.
Chan made the remarks while speaking to reporters on Saturday on the sidelines of the Macau A-Ma Culture and Tourism Festival at A-Ma Cultural Village on Coloane Hill.
