Macau Taxi Drivers Mutual Association President Tony Kuok Leong Son yesterday slammed the government for its “sluggish” drafting of a bill regulating the city’s taxi sector after studying the matter for years.

Kuok also said that the 1,000-pataca fine for rogue taxi drivers stipulated in the existing taxi sector regulation does not deter them from committing violations such as overcharging passengers. He called for an increase in the fine, adding that repeat violators’ work licences should be suspended for a while.

Kuok made the remarks yesterday during a forum where he was a guest speaker about the city’s taxi service hosted by the Alliance for Common People Building Up Macau (API) at its headquarters in Areia Preta district. About 40 people, mostly senior citizens, attended the forum.
