According to a statement by the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) yesterday, due to the cold weather the winter shelter in Rua do Asilo in Ilha Verde will remain open until the mercury rises again.
The centre provides bedding, hot food and hot drinks. Social services such as counselling are also available for those who need them. The bureau urged the elderly and the chronically ill to be aware of the recent weather changes and keep warm during the cold weather.
According to the statement, the shelter has recorded 40 visits since December 8. The statement added that since December 8, IAS officials have given blankets and hot food to homeless people, urging them to visit the winter shelter during the cold spell. The statement urged the public to phone the bureau’s hotline 28270939 or 63991963 if coming across any homeless people appearing to require shelter from the cold.
A statement by the Health Bureau (SSM) yesterday revealed the case of an 87-year-old man suffering from hypothermia who remains at the public Conde de S. Januario Hospital Centre under observation. No date was given for when he was admitted.
