Two suspects from the mainland were arrested over their alleged involvement in a Chinese chess (“xiangqi”) scam, which was set up to cheat the victim out of 1.5 million yuan in a game, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Tam Weng Keong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Tam said that in the small hours of Saturday, the Judiciary Police received a report from a male mainlander who told the police that he had just escaped from a hotel room in Nape where he had been held against his will. According to Tam, the victim, whose surname was not revealed, told the police that he was locked in the room after losing the game of chess.

After investigating, Tam said, the police confirmed that in August the victim met one of the arrested suspects surnamed Gao, aged 51, and later was introduced to two other male suspects, surnamed Tan and Liang, in the mainland. Since then the victim played Chinese chess with Liang and placed a bet of 100 yuan on every game they played in which the victim won them all.
