PJ records 5-fold rise in phone scams last year

Judiciary Police (PJ) Acting Director Sit Chong Meng said yesterday that the number of phone scam cases recorded by his criminal investigation force rose to 146 last year from just 26 in 2016, a 5.6-fold rise.

Sit revealed the figure during a Spring Festival luncheon for the media at the PJ headquarters in Zape.

According to Sit, the overall number of all types of suspected crime cases the Judiciary Police recorded last year increased 2.3 percent to 12,629.
