A non-local employee working at a local telecommunications company was nabbed for stealing 23 smartphones, worth a total of 190,000 patacas, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman said yesterday during a special press conference at the PJ headquarters in Zape.

The spokesman identified the suspect as a 30-year-old non-resident worker from the mainland surnamed Hu, who worked as a manager of the company’s branch in Rua Nova da Areia Preta.

According to the spokesman, a staff member at the branch on Tuesday saw that a smartphone box in the storeroom was open and the phone missing. After checking all the items in the storeroom, it was found that 23 phones had gone missing. Suspecting that the phones had been stolen by the manager, the staff member and Hu went to a police station to report the case later that day.
