Guest speakers and members of the audience at yesterday’s Macau Forum expressed the view that the government’s new mortgage rules have nothing to do with solving the fundamental problem of the city’s residential property market – housing prices that are too high so that residents in general, including young people, cannot afford to buy a flat.

The weekly open-air debate is hosted by government-owned broadcaster TDM in Areia Preta Park every Sunday.

The government announced last week new mortgage rules for young locals who want to buy their first home – aged between 21 and 44 – by increasing the percentage of mortgage rates available to them.
