The Macau Correctional Services Bureau (DSC) said in a statement on Sunday that a prisoner from Coloane died from a heart attack after trying to stop a fight.
According to the statement, the prisoner surnamed Chen and aged 52, was a mainlander. He was imprisoned for blackmailing and coercion in October 2016, the statement added, noting that Chen was reported to suffer from a heart condition for which he was provided with treatment by the prison’s medical staff.
The statement noted that at 7:10 p.m. on Christmas Day, two of Chen’s cell mates got into a fight. The statement pointed out that Chen was trying to stop the fight when he suddenly fainted. The statement said that the medical workers in the prison immediately rushed him to the public Conde S. Januário Hospital Centre but Chen passed away at 8:24 p.m.
The statement said that social workers have contacted the bereaved family in the mainland and will provide them with the necessary assistance.
