A man from the mainland fell victim to a money exchange scam on Sunday, losing more than 30,000 yuan, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said during a regular press conference yesterday in Zape.

Lei said that the victim, whose surname was not revealed, was at a casino in Cotai on Sunday morning. While he was there, a man and a woman approached him and asked if he needed to change any money. The duo claimed that they could help the victim exchange HK$50,000 for 41,750 yuan. Believing that it was a good exchange rate, apart from the fact that the banks were closed at the time, the victim accepted the offer and gave the amount to the duo.

According to Lei, the woman initially transferred 6,000 yuan to the victim’s account via an online chat application. Later the man claimed that they needed to send the remaining amount from another account and the victim would get the remainder two hours later. The duo then left the scene.
