The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a local man on Monday for stealing HK$293,635 on Sunday from a handbag shop where he worked because of gambling debts, PJ spokeswoman Yeung Sau Chan said during a special press conference yesterday.
Yeung identified the suspect as a 24-year-old surnamed Lei. He had been working as a salesman in the handbag shop in the city centre for a year.
According to Yeung, Lei told the female supervisor of the shop that he needed to go to the toilet – which is located outside the shop –three times between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Sunday night, citing that he was unwell. When Lei left the shop to go to the toilet the third time, he did not return.
