A man from the mainland has been arrested for keeping a mobile phone a passenger left on a bus and then trying to blackmail him, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Fong Cheong Chun said yesterday during a regular press conference.

According to Fong, the suspect is a 38-year-old decorator from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, surnamed Huang. The victim, Gou, is a 20-year-old man from the mainland studying at a local university.

Fong said that on Monday afternoon Gou got on a bus in Taipa heading for Wynn Palace in Cotai. After getting off the bus, he realised that he had left his smartphone, worth HK$8,000, on the bus. He called his phone only to have Huang answer it. Huang demanded 2,000 yuan from Gou if he wanted his phone back, and the two arranged to meet in Rua de Lagos later that night.
