Police warn of ‘low-risk-high-return investment’ pyramid scam

The Judiciary Police (PJ) are aware of suspected pyramid scams in Macau, in which residents could be persuaded to join a “crowdfunding platform” claiming that investing a small amount of money would generate a profit of up to 150 percent while the investors “don’t need to do anything”, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement yesterday.

The statement pointed out that the pyramid schemes are potentially illegal.

A pyramid scheme is a commercial practice or a form of investment that recruits members via a promise of payments or services for enrolling others into the scheme, rather than supplying investments or sale of products or services, according to Wikipedia. As recruiting multiplies, recruiting becomes quickly impossible, and most members are unable to profit, Wikipedia points out.
