The Macau Drivers Will Win Rights Union urged the government yesterday to rethink its plan to sign a reciprocal driving-licence recognition deal with the mainland as it could potentially worsen the problem of illegal hiring of non-local commercial drivers.
Speaking to reporters before handing in a petition outside Government Headquarters, Thomas Chan Kin Tong, who heads the union of about 300 drivers, said there were many illegally employed drivers working in Macau. He described the situation as “very serious”.
He noted that illegally hired drivers tended to be unfamiliar with the city’s traffic conditions and were used to different driving regulations, such as driving on the right instead of driving on the left, which already had caused a number of traffic accidents in Macau.
