A local man has been arrested for beating his son with a bamboo stick and a plastic pole, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said during a regular press conference yesterday in Zape.

According to Lei, the suspect is a 34-year-old surnamed Iong, who works as a croupier while the victim, aged eight, studies at a school in San Kio district.

Lei noted that since Iong and his wife divorced in late 2014, their son has been living with his father. The divorced couple also have a younger daughter, who lives with the suspect’s mother.

On Wednesday evening, Lei said, Iong and his son were at their home in Fai Chi Kei. The son, who had earlier been fighting with a schoolmate at school, told his father about it. Becoming angry, Iong took out a bamboo stick and a plastic pole. With the two objects, Iong beat his son on his hands and legs. As the child was screaming in pain, a neighbour who heard this called the police.

Public Security Police (PSP) officers went to the flat later that evening, according to Lei. Under questioning, Iong admitted beating his son, insisting that he was merely trying to discipline him. He told officers that he had done so before when his son was throwing a tantrum.

The Public Security Police transferred the case to the Judiciary Police for further investigation on the following day.

Lei also said that the boy had undergone a medical examination, adding that his wounds provided the necessary evidence for the police to suggest possible assault charges to the Public Prosecution Office (MP).

Lei said that Iong had been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office for further investigation.

When asked by The Macau Post Daily about who was now looking after the boy, Lei replied that the Judiciary Police (PJ) had notified the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) and the Social Affairs Bureau (IAS) about the incident, adding that the authorities would follow up on the case.
