Lawmaker Ho Ion Sang, who heads the legislature’s 1st Standing Committee, said yesterday that the government concurred with view raised by some members of his committee yesterday that it may need to propose “major” amendments to the city’s law on assemblies and demonstrations in the future – but only after the current amendment bill has been passed.

Ho briefed the media after a closed-door meeting of his committee which is reviewing a government-initiated bill which proposes amendments to the law on assemblies and demonstrations, the outline of which was passed during a plenary session early last month.

According to the proposed amendments, groups and individuals who plan to hold an assembly or demonstration will need to inform the Public Security Police (PSP) in advance, a change from the current situation in which they need to inform the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM).
