The police arrested 110 men and women from the mainland at several casino-hotel resorts in Cotai between Friday and yesterday for illegally engaging in currency-exchange activities and various other illegal activities.
The three-day operation to combat unlicensed money-changing activities and other illegal activities on the premises or the margins of several casinos, coordinated by the Unitary Police Service (SPU), was jointly carried out by the Judiciary Police (PJ) and the Public Security Police (PSP). The operation took place in the wake of a fight involving about 10 men outside the Venetian – captured on video which was widely circulated online – that occurred on Wednesday night last week.
According to previous news reports, scores of illegal money changers routinely walk around casinos asking gamblers if they want to exchange currency, mostly yuan and Hong Kong dollars, offering them seemingly attractive exchange rates.
