Members of the audience at yesterday’s Macau Forum expressed concern that the security of local residents’ personal data could be jeopardised once Alibaba Group starts processing information stored in its future cloud computing data centre during Macau’s smart city development.
In response to audience members’ worries, guest speaker Lio Chi Chong, a senior official of the Personal Data Protection Office (GPDP), said that the city’s Personal Data Protection Law can ensure the protection of residents’ personal data also during its smart city development process. He added that all companies operating in Macau are subject to a string of restrictions stipulated by the Personal Data Protection Law when they transmit data from outside Macau.
The weekly open-air debate is hosted by government-owned broadcaster TDM in Areia Preta Park every Sunday.
