Since its opening four months ago, Ají has been the topic of conversations amongst friends, and food aficionados in particular.

Some expected it to be a Japanese restaurant but were unexpectedly surprised to find that it is not entirely Japanese when they saw and tasted the food. Some thought it was a fancy Peruvian restaurant. So to set the record straight, Ají is a Nikkei restaurant, the first of its kind in Macau.

Nikkei cuisine is, as described by Mitsuharu Tsumura, Peruvian cuisine with Japanese influences in techniques and ingredients. And “ají” in Spanish means chilli pepper, the staple of Peruvian cuisine, and the same word in Japanese means “taste”.
