The city’s busy thoroughfare Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (also known as “San Ma Lou”) will undergo roadworks from June 30 to August 31 as the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) will repair the underground drains there and resurface the road, IACM Division of Public Roads head Lei Wa Po said yesterday during a press conference at the Northern District Public Services Centre in Areia Preta.
The press conference was co-host by representatives of IACM, Transport Bureau (DSAT), and Public Security Police (PSP).
Lei said that the underground drains were constructed in 1928, and have been in use for 90 years. He said as the current surface of the road has been in use for about 30 years, there was subsidence, in March, caused by soil erosion as a result of the constant heavy traffic in the busy thoroughfare.
He noted that it was necessary to carry out large-scale roadworks in the avenue.
According to Lei, during the period of the roadworks Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro would become a one-way street, with vehicles only allowed to go in the direction of Ponte 16. He said that the roadworks would be carried out 24/7 in order to complete the work on time while the work that creates a lot of noise would take place during the day in order to minimise any possible disturbance.
DSAT Traffic Management Department chief Lo Seng Chi noted the roadworks would affect about 15 bus routes, which have a passenger capacity of 160,000 per day. He said that his bureau would hold another press conference about the details of the re-routing.
According to Lo, coaches would be banned from using some of the nearby roads including Rua de Dom Belchior Carneiro and Estrada do Cemiterio, and also the underground car park at Tap Seac Square from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the period.
