The government abruptly announced yesterday that it has decided to halt its plan to build Macau’s first crematorium at Taipa Sa Kong Municipal Cemetery, following strong opposition to the project by residents living nearby.

The Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) made the announcement during a hastily convened press conference at its headquarters in Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro yesterday afternoon.

The bureau also said that it would continue to study alternative locations suitable for a crematorium.
