The Health Bureau (SSM) said yesterday that 70 percent of surgeons at the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital have mastered the skills to carry out single-port laparoscopy (SPL) – a recently developed technique in laparoscopic surgery.
According to Wikipedia, laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery (MIS), is a modern surgical technique in which operations are performed far from their location through small incisions (usually 0.5 – 1.5 centimetres) elsewhere in the body.
According to Wikipedia, single-port laparoscopy, also known as single-port access surgery (SPA), is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which the surgeon operates almost exclusively through a single entry point, typically the patient’s navel. Unlike a traditional multi-port laparoscopic approach, SPL leaves only a single small scar.
