A local man was arrested last Thursday in the local airport’s immigration area for cheating a female friend out of HK$17 million, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Ho, the suspect is a 49-year-old surnamed Cheang, who is a shareholder of a junket operator in Macau, while the victim is a local businesswoman in her forties, whose surname was not revealed. Ho said they were friends.
Ho said that in April 2015, Cheang persuaded the victim to deposit HK$20 million into his account in the junket operator’s VIP room for which the victim would receive a monthly interest of 1.5 percent, so she deposited the amount into the account.
