Beijing to allow Macau Chinese residents to apply for mainland residence permits

The State Council General Office has drafted a new regulation that will allow Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan residents to apply for mainland residence permits, according to a document issued at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office in Beijing yesterday.

According to the statement, with the residence permit, people from Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan will enjoy more rights, basic public services, and other conveniences relating to their study, work, business operation, and life on the mainland, adding that the new regulation will take effect on September 1.

Public Security Vice Minister Shi Jun, Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Vice Director Huang Liuquan and Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) Vice Director Long Mingbiao attended the press conference. The vice director-general of the central government’s Press Bureau, who is also the spokeswoman for the State Council Information Office, Xi Yanchun, chaired the press conference.
