Sino-Vatican deal won’t affect local diocese under Basic Law: bishop

Local Roman Catholic Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-Sang said yesterday that no matter what the details of the recently signed provisional Sino-Vatican agreement are, it wouldn’t affect the Macau diocese under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle guaranteed by the Macau Basic Law.

Lee made the remarks in an interview with The Macau Post Daily at the Bishop’s House in the city centre.

In an English-language statement published on the diocese’s website yesterday, Lee writes, “I am pleased to learn that on September 22 China and the Vatican signed a provisional agreement concerning the appointment of bishops in mainland China. I thoroughly reckon that both parties have worked towards this provisional agreement after a long period of time with persistent effort of research and dialogue. This agreement is a positive move especially in favour of the communion of the Catholic Church in China and the Universal Church,” adding that
