A sand barge caught fire when it was travelling about two nautical miles (3.7 kilometres) east of the Taipa Ferry Terminal yesterday morning, according to a joint statement by the Macau Customs Service and the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA).

The DSAMA Vessel Traffic Control Centre received a distress signal from the crew of the sand barge shortly after 8 a.m. yesterday that a fire had broken out in the cabin when the vessel was travelling from Shenzhen to Wanzai harbour in the neighbouring city of Zhuhai, according to the statement.

The bureau deployed several of its rescue vessels to the scene and also informed the Macau Customs Service, while Zhuhai’s maritime entities also deployed vessels to the location, the statement said.
