Two mainland men who lent a gambler HK$250,000 last Sunday were arrested on Monday, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said during a regular press briefing yesterday.

The two suspects are surnamed Huang and Chen, aged 25 and 22 respectively, lent the instant gambling loan to the victim, a 37 year-old man from mainland, on Sunday, based on the condition that for every bet that the victim won he had to pay 15 percent “interest” and also sign an IOU of the HK$250,000, according to the PJ spokesman.

Leng also said that at around 4 a.m. on Monday the man had gambled all the money away, so Huang and Chen held the victim against his will in a hotel room. At around 2 p.m. on Monday the two suspects had to check out of the hotel room so they took their victim with them to the main lobby of the hotel to check out. While in the lobby, the man started screaming for help which alerted the hotel security guards and the police were called. The police caught the two suspects and both admitted to the crime, Leng said.

The suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for further investigation and possible arraignments on charges of usury and false imprisonment.
